Jefferson
Memorial
The Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson,
the third President and primary author of the Declaration of Independence. Overlooking the
Tidal Basin, the Jefferson Memorial is a ten-minute walk from the Lincoln Memorial.
The Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to Thomas
Jefferson, called the 1-2-3 President because he was the first Secretary of State, the
second-vice President and the third President. Besides these accomplishments, he was the
main author of the Declaration of Independence and an accomplished architect. He designed
the rotundas of the Univ. of Virginia and his mansion Monticello after the Pantheon in
Rome, so it is only befitting that his own memorial is built in the same style.
John Russell Pope designed a monument with colonnade
and dome around a 19-foot statue of Jefferson. Excerpts from Jeffersons writings are
inscribed on the walls.
