This 555- foot obelisk towers over the National Mall and has come to represent Washington D.C. itself. Catching the view from the top of the monument is one of the requisite events on a trip to the city.

In order to go to the top of the Washington Monument, visitors must pick up free same-day, time stamped tickets from the ticket and information kiosk on 15th Street. April - Labor Day the booth opens at 7:30 AM and will hand out a maximum of six tickets per person. ( The booth opens at 8:30 after Labor Day - March)  Tickets allow a visit anytime within a specified 30-minute period. Its a  good idea to show up at the designated time ten-minutes early.
No tickets are required after 8PM ( 3PM in the off-season).

If you're up for it, take the staircase tour offered on weekends. Visitors can inspect the stones, plaques and artifacts that line the staircase as they descend the monument's 900 stairs.
