Corcoran Gallery of Art
The Corcoran Gallery of Art houses
Washingtons oldest art collection. Featuring works by impressionists, the Hudson
River School and others, the Corcorans permanent collection numbers over 11,000
works.
Considered one of the
worlds great art galleries, the Corcoran Gallery of Art is located in the heart of
Washington. The Gallery is not part of the Smithsonian Institution, so admission is
required. A suggested fee of $3 will gain you entrance into a world-renowned collection of
American, Dutch and Flemish masterpieces.
The emphasis at the Corcoran is
on American art, including examples of 18th century portraiture and The Hudson
River School all the way to the 20th century masters like Stella and
Lichtenstein. The Walker collection has European paintings from the late 19th
and early 20th century including works by Monet and Renoir. Dutch, Flemish and
French Romantic art enthusiasts will enjoy the pieces in the Clark collection, featuring
the restored Salon Dore of the Hotel dOrsay in Paris.
The Corcoran also houses an
impressive collection of photographs and works by contemporary artists. The Corcoran
is a prominant sponsor of local artists and runs Washington's only accredited art college,
the Corcoran School of Art.
