Only 5 blocks from the White House, The National Geographic society is a fantastic
place to take budding scientists who need a break from the Mall and the summer heat. There
are many interactive games and exhibits that children and adults would both enjoy. You can
touch an active tornado, quiz yourself on touch screen stations or view some of the
temporary exhibits. The "Cats! Wild to Mild" exhibit runs now through September
7th , tracing the evolution of the housecat and wild felines.
Earth Station One is definitely worth the trip. This interactive show in a 72-seat
amphitheater simulates an orbital flight 23,000 miles above the earth. Its a great
break from walking and the show is very entertaining. Earth Station One is built around an
11-foot globe that is suspended on a cushion of air.
