National Museum of American History

The National Museum of American History helps the Smithsonian earn the nickname of "the nation’s attic". One can view the momentos of a nation ranging from the flag that inspired "The Star Spangled Banner" to Fonzie’s leather jacket.

What's New Insider Tips

Location: 14th Street and Constitution Avenue, Washington 20560

Phone: (202)   357-2700

Hours: Daily 10:00am- 5:30pm

Admission: Free

Metro: Smithsonian

The National Museum of American History is often the first stop on the museum trail, so it's easy to make a couple of novice mistakes. The first tip is to take your time -   the museum attempts to represent all facets of American life,  so the numerous displays are easy to miss. Another tip is to avoid the food court located on the lower level. The food is unremarkable and overpriced.

The Hands On History and Hands On Science programs are sure-fire hits with the kids. They allow kids to handle artifacts or conduct science experiments under the watchful eye of  friendly staff members.  Anticipate a crowd. See the "Attraction Overview" for more information.

Get your souvenirs at the museum shop also located on the lower level. It is the largest of the Smithsonian stores.
