The National Portrait Gallery can be reached from any floor of the National Museum of American Art, which is also located in the Old Patent Office Building. These two Museums offer the chance to study American history through art, and as a bonus, they tend to be less crowded than the other Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall. The result is that you can take a leisurely stroll down the halls without being accosted by running children.

Try to exit the building through the doors on F Street, the view is fantastic. You can get a good view of Federal Triangle and Union Station.
